NSF Awards $5M for IOWarp Research

The National Science Foundation has awarded $5 million through Award #2411318 to fund IOWarp's development over 5 years (2024-2029). The grant supports research into context engineering infrastructure for autonomous AI agents in scientific computing.

PI: Dr. Xian-He Sun (Illinois Institute of Technology). Co-PIs: Dr. Anthony Kougkas (IIT), Dr. Jake Hochhalter and Dr. Vivek Srikumar (University of Utah). Partners: The HDF Group.

The funding will support development of the four core engines: CLIO Ingest, CLIO Transfer, CLIO Explore, and CLIO Plugin, deployment at national HPC centers, and training of next-generation researchers in context engineering.

IOWarp Platform Beta Release

IOWarp v0.5.x is now available for early adopters. This release includes CLIO Transfer with MegaMmap-based intelligent tiering, CLIO Ingest with HDF5 and NetCDF support, and Docker deployment.

Performance highlights from SC'24 benchmarks: 20% faster than MPI-based tiered I/O, 2.6x DRAM reduction.

Get started: clio deploy --mode docker with the provided wrp_conf.yaml configuration.

CLIO Kit: 16+ MCP Servers for Scientific Computing

IOWarp CLIO Kit is now available with 16+ Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers providing 150+ tools for scientific computing. Servers include mcp-hdf5, mcp-slurm, mcp-darshan, mcp-lmod, mcp-jarvis, mcp-chronolog, mcp-paraview, and more. Compatible with Claude Code, Cursor, and VS Code.

Dr. Luke Logan Appointed Head Engineer

Dr. Luke Logan has been appointed as IOWarp's Head Engineer, bringing expertise in distributed systems, hierarchical storage, and HPC I/O optimization. Luke led the development of Hermes and LABIOS, the foundational technologies behind IOWarp's Content Transfer Engine.

His PhD research at Illinois Tech produced the MegaMmap framework presented at SC'24.

The project combines 8 years of systems research with emerging AI agent capabilities.
